Fiston Mwanza Mujila was born in 1981 in Lubumbashi, Democratic Republic of the Congo, where he studied literature and the humanities. After study periods in Belgium and France and stays in Germany, he came to Graz in 2009 as the city’s writer-in-residence. He worked as an author, performer and editor, and taught African literature at the University of Graz. His work includes poetry, prose, short stories and plays; as a performer, he also collaborated with jazz musicians. His debut novel, Tram 83 (2016), received, among other honors, the International Literature Award from the Haus der Kulturen der Welt, the Peter Rosegger Literature Prize and the Prix Les Afriques. It was also longlisted for the Man Booker International Prize and the Prix du Monde.
