Mary Austin

Mary Hunter Austin (1868–1934) was an American writer and is regarded as one of the early American nature writers. Over several decades, she researched and described the Indigenous people and landscape of the Mojave Desert in Southern California. She wrote essays, including one about H. G. Wells, as well as a play about Indigenous people. Mount Mary Austin in the Sierra Nevada was named after her.
