Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) was a British physician and writer. He studied medicine in Edinburgh and initially practiced as a doctor before making a living from writing from 1891 onward. His novel A Study in Scarlet (1887) introduced Sherlock Holmes and Dr. Watson. Among his best-known works are also The Hound of the Baskervilles and The Lost World, featuring Professor Challenger. Doyle wrote four Holmes novels and 56 short stories, as well as works in many other genres. During the Second Boer War, he served as a physician in South Africa. He was knighted in 1902.
