Jane Austen

Jane Austen (1775–1817) was an English novelist. She grew up as the daughter of a clergyman in Hampshire, in a well-educated and literary family, and began writing in her youth. Austen never married and initially published her novels anonymously under the attribution “By a Lady”. Her best-known works include “Sense and Sensibility”, “Pride and Prejudice”, “Mansfield Park” and “Emma”. “Northanger Abbey” and “Persuasion” were published after her death. In novels marked by social observation and fine irony, she portrayed the world of the English landed gentry and the limited social and economic position of women. She is regarded as one of the major English writers.
