Agatha Christie (1890–1976) was a British author and one of the best-known crime writers in literary history. She published more than 60 crime novels, as well as numerous short stories and plays. Her most famous characters include Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple. She also wrote several novels under the pseudonym Mary Westmacott. From the 1950s onward, she adapted some of her crime stories for the stage; her play The Mousetrap became one of her best-known works. Christie was married to an archaeologist in her second marriage and accompanied him on excavations in the Middle East. In 1971, she was appointed a Dame Commander of the Order of the British Empire.
