Louisa May Alcott (1832–1888) was an American novelist, short story writer and poet best known for »Little Women«. The novel, shaped by her own childhood experiences and those of her three sisters, has become a classic of children’s and young adult literature. Alcott also wrote further novels, including »Little Men« and »Jo’s Boys«, as well as short stories and poetry. Some of her suspenseful and sensational fiction for adults was published under the pseudonym A. M. Barnard. Before establishing herself as a writer, she worked, among other occupations, as a teacher, seamstress and housekeeper.
