John Clare (1793–1864) was a British poet. Born in Helpstone, Northamptonshire, into poor circumstances, he was largely self-educated. His best-known works include the poetry collections Poems Descriptive of Rural Life and Scenery (1820) and Village Minstrel and other Poems (1821), which brought him recognition during his lifetime. Clare died in 1864 in a psychiatric hospital.
