Virginia Woolf (1882–1941), born Adeline Virginia Stephen, was a British novelist, essayist, literary critic, and publisher. She grew up in a wealthy intellectual family in London and was educated at home. In 1917, she and her husband, Leonard Woolf, founded the Hogarth Press, which published her own works as well as literature by other modern writers. Her best-known works include the novels *Mrs Dalloway*, *To the Lighthouse*, and *Orlando*, as well as the essay *A Room of One’s Own* (1929). Woolf is regarded as one of the defining writers of literary modernism.
