George Herbert

George Herbert (1593–1633) was an English poet associated with the so-called metaphysical poets. He studied theology and philosophy at the University of Cambridge and subsequently served as the university’s Public Orator. In 1624 and 1625, he was an elected member of the English Parliament. He was ordained as a priest in 1630. Herbert came from a wealthy family; his mother was a friend of the poet John Donne, and his brother Edward Herbert was a poet and philosopher. George Herbert died of tuberculosis in Bemerton, Wiltshire, on 1 March 1633.
