Ulrich Matthes, born in Berlin in 1959, is an actor and audiobook narrator. After early engagements in Krefeld/Mönchengladbach, Düsseldorf and at the Bayerisches Staatsschauspiel, he worked at the Munich Kammerspiele and the Schaubühne in Berlin. From 2004, he was a member of the ensemble of the Deutsches Theater Berlin. He became known for roles in films including »Downfall«, »The Ninth Day« and »Bornholmer Straße«. The jury of »Theater heute« named him Actor of the Year in 2005 and 2008; in 2008 he received the DER FAUST theatre award. In 2015, he was awarded the Grimme Prize and a Goldene Kamera for his role in the television crime drama »Im Schmerz geboren«. He also recorded numerous audiobooks and radio plays and received the German Audiobook Award for Best Narrator in 2015.
