Freya Klier

Freya Klier (born 1950 in Dresden) is a German author, actress, theater director, documentary filmmaker, and civil rights activist. In East Germany, she worked as a theater director until she was banned from her profession. In 1980, she co-founded the East German peace movement. In 1988, she was arrested along with other civil rights activists and forcibly expatriated. Her publications include “Abreiß-Kalender. Ein deutsch-deutsches Tagebuch,” “Lüg Vaterland. Erziehung in der DDR,” and “Die Kaninchen von Ravensbrück.” Klier received numerous honors, including the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2012 and the Franz Werfel Human Rights Award in 2016.
