Merith Niehuss was born in Bielefeld in 1954 and studied sociology and history at the University of Munich. She received her doctorate in 1982 and completed her habilitation in modern and contemporary history in 1993. She worked as an academic councillor and research staff member at the Institute of Modern History in Munich. Her research focused on the history of parliamentarism and social history from the German Empire to the Federal Republic of Germany. She also published books and articles on workers’ history, elections, and family history.
