Volker Reinhardt

Volker Reinhardt was Professor of Modern General and Swiss History at the University of Freiburg (Fribourg) from 1992 until his retirement. His research focused on the Italian Renaissance, particularly the Renaissance papacy. He published numerous books on Italian and French history as well as biographies, including Alexander VI Borgia, Machiavelli oder Die Kunst der Macht, Voltaire. Die Abenteuer der Freiheit and Der nach den Sternen griff. Giordano Bruno. He received the Golo Mann Prize for Historiography for his biography of Machiavelli. In 2020, he was awarded the Kythera Cultural Foundation Prize for his life’s work.
