Volker Leppin

Volker Leppin (born 1966 in Helmstedt, Germany) studied Protestant theology and German studies in Marburg, Jerusalem, and Heidelberg. After earning his doctorate in 1994 and completing his habilitation in 1997, he was professor of church history at the University of Jena from 2000 to 2010 and at the University of Tübingen from 2010 to 2021. He subsequently taught Historical Theology at Yale University. Leppin is a member of the Heidelberg and Saxon Academies of Sciences. His research focuses on the late Middle Ages, the Reformation, scholasticism, and mysticism. He has received, among other honors, the Ruprecht-Karls Prize, the Hanns-Lilje Prize, and the Gerhard Hess Prize. His publications include “Ruhen in Gott: Eine Geschichte der christlichen Mystik” (2021).
