Irina Scherbakowa

Irina Scherbakova, born in Moscow in 1949, is a Russian historian, Germanist, cultural scholar and writer. After completing her doctorate, she worked as a translator of German fiction and as a journalist, including for Literaturnaya Gazeta. She was one of the co-founders of the human rights organisation Memorial and taught at the Centre for Oral History at the Moscow State University of Humanities. She was also a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin and the Institute for Human Sciences in Vienna. Her publications include “Russia’s Memory” (2003), “Restless Times” (2006) and “Only a Miracle Could Have Saved Us” (2000).
