Jan Claas Behrends (born 1969) is a historian. His academic positions have included a professorship at the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), project leadership at the Leibniz Center for Contemporary History in Potsdam, and teaching Eastern European history at Humboldt University of Berlin. His research has focused on the contemporary history of Eastern Europe, urban history, European dictatorships, and the study of violence. His publications include *Die erfundene Freundschaft. Propaganda für die Sowjetunion in Polen und in der DDR* (2006), *100 Jahre Roter Oktober* (co-editor, 2017), and *The Return to War and Violence* (editor, 2017).
