Janka Bryl (1917–2006) was a writer and translator. Born in Odessa, he returned with his family in 1922 to southern Belarus, his father’s homeland. He published his first poems in 1938. Drafted into the Polish Army in 1939, he was captured by Germany and subjected to forced labor. After an escape attempt, he joined a partisan unit in 1942. His extensive literary work also includes the documentary volume *The Fiery Villages: Wehrmacht Crimes in Belarus—Eyewitness Accounts*, which he created with Ales Adamovich and Uladzimir Kalesnik between 1970 and 1973.
