Nikolaus Schneider

Nikolaus Schneider, born in Duisburg in 1947, is a Protestant theologian. He studied Protestant theology in Wuppertal, Göttingen and Münster, where he also worked at the Institute for New Testament Textual Research. After serving as a parish and social welfare pastor, he was a pastor in Duisburg-Rheinhausen and Moers and, from 1987 to 1997, superintendent of the Moers church district. Schneider served as Präses, or presiding officer, of the Evangelical Church in the Rhineland from 2003 to 2013. From 2010 to 2014, he was chair of the Council of the Evangelical Church in Germany (EKD), the leading representative body of Germany’s Protestant churches.
