Bernd Janowski (born 1943) is a German Protestant theologian and scholar of the Hebrew Bible. He studied Protestant theology, Ancient Near Eastern studies, and Egyptology in Tübingen, received his doctorate in 1980, and completed his habilitation in 1984. After professorships in Hamburg and Heidelberg, he taught at the University of Tübingen from 1995 and was professor of Old Testament there until his retirement in 2011. From 1996, he was an ordinary member of the Heidelberg Academy of Sciences. Janowski served as a co-editor of the fourth edition of the RGG and of the series “Texts from the Environment of the Old Testament: New Series.” His research focused on Old Testament theology and anthropology, the religious history of Israel, and the Psalms. His publications include “Conflict Conversations with God,” “Anthropology of the Old Testament,” and “A God Who Punishes and Kills?”
