Martin Urban, born in Berlin in 1936, came from a family of theologians. He studied physics, chemistry and mathematics and initially worked as a physicist in plasma physics. In 1965 he joined the Süddeutsche Zeitung, where he built up the science section from 1968 and headed it until 2002. Among other honors, he received the Theodor Wolff Prize for outstanding achievements in science journalism. Urban contributed to numerous publications as an author and editor and wrote nonfiction books on thought and faith.
