Klaus Theweleit

Klaus Theweleit was born in East Prussia in 1942. He studied German and English in Kiel and Freiburg and worked as a freelance contributor for Südwestfunk from 1969 to 1972. In 1977, he received his doctorate with a dissertation on “Freikorps Literature and the Body of the Soldier.” He became particularly known for his two-volume work “Männerphantasien” (1977–78), an examination of militarized conceptions of masculinity and their social contexts. From 1998 to 2008, Theweleit was Professor of Art and Theory at the State Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe. He also worked as a freelance writer and held teaching positions in Germany, the United States, Switzerland, and Austria.
