James Dickey

James Dickey (1923–1997) was an American writer and poet. Born in Atlanta, he served as a combat pilot in the Pacific during the Second World War. After studying English and briefly working as a teacher, he worked in advertising before devoting himself entirely to writing from 1960 onward. He became widely known for the novel “Deliverance” and for his poetry. His major poetry collections include “Drowning with Others,” “Buckdancer’s Choice,” which received the National Book Award, and “The Zodiac.” Dickey served as Poet Laureate of the United States from 1966 to 1968. He died in South Carolina in 1997.
