Roald Dahl (1916–1990) was a British writer. Born in Wales to Norwegian parents, he initially worked for the Shell Company in East Africa. During the Second World War, he served as a Royal Air Force pilot. In addition to short stories for adults, he wrote numerous imaginative and humorous children’s books, including *Charlie and the Chocolate Factory*, *James and the Giant Peach*, *The BFG*, *The Witches*, and *Matilda*. Many of his works have been translated into numerous languages and adapted for film. While at school, Dahl took part in chocolate tasting for testing purposes; this experience is considered an inspiration for *Charlie and the Chocolate Factory*.
