Detlef Pollack, born in 1955, is a German sociologist of religion. After studying theology, he received his doctorate in 1984 and completed his habilitation in 1994. He held professorships in the sociology of religion in Leipzig, in cultural sociology at the European University Viadrina Frankfurt (Oder), and at the University of Münster from 2008 to 2022. From 2003 to 2005, he was Max Weber Chair at New York University; he was also a fellow at the Wissenschaftskolleg zu Berlin and the Lichtenberg-Kolleg Göttingen. His research focuses on religion in modern society, secularization, religious pluralism, and political culture in Germany and Europe.
