Ursula Schmid-Spreer was a teacher in the healthcare sector before publishing numerous short stories, novels, and contributions to anthologies as well as television and literary magazines. She was also involved as a co-editor of numerous crime-fiction anthologies. Her crime novels include stories set in Ireland and Nuremberg; she also published »Zuckergoscherl«, a literary tour of Viennese cafés. Several of her short stories were set to music, and one was adapted for the stage. Her work received, among other distinctions, the Audience Award from the Akademie für Autoren in Berlin and second prize in the »Totentanz« competition in Vienna.
