Tomas Venclova

Tomas Venclova, born in 1937 in Klaipėda (formerly Memel), is a Lithuanian poet and essayist. He emigrated to the United States in 1977 and taught Russian literature at Yale University until his retirement. His works published in German include the poetry collections “Vor der Tür das Ende der Welt” (2001) and “Gespräch im Winter” (2007), “Vilnius. Eine Stadt in Europa” (2006), and “Der magnetische Norden” (2017). His work has been widely translated and received numerous awards, including the Petrarca Prize in 2014. In 2022, Hanser published a selection of his poems under the title “Variation über das Thema Erwachen”.
