Born in 1944 in Bad Hall near Linz, Robert Schindel is a poet, writer, and director. As the child of communist parents, he survived the Nazi era in Vienna. He studied philosophy and co-founded »Hundsblume«. From 1986 onward, he published as a freelance writer. He chaired the Ingeborg Bachmann Prize from 1999 to 2002 and was appointed professor at the University of Applied Arts Vienna in 2009. His works include the novel »Gebürtig« (1992), »Fremd bei mir selbst« (2004), and »Der Kalte« (2013). Among other honors, he received the Erich Fried Prize, the Eduard Mörike Prize, the City of Vienna Prize for Literature, and the Heinrich Mann Prize.
