Hermann Schulz, born in East Africa in 1938, grew up in Moers-Repelen, Germany. After completing an apprenticeship as a bookseller, he initially worked in mining and later travelled through, among other regions, Africa, South America and the Middle East. From 1967 to 2001, he headed the Peter Hammer Verlag publishing house in Wuppertal, whose programme focused on literature from Africa and Latin America, modern German history, and books for children and young adults. After taking early retirement, Schulz published numerous children’s and young adult books as well as novels, including “Auf dem Strom,” “Iskender,” “Mandela & Nelson,” and “Therese. Das Mädchen, das mit den Krokodilen spielte.” His books appeared in about ten languages.
