Manfred Bieler (1934–2002) was a German writer and author of radio and television plays. Born in Zerbst/Anhalt, he studied German literature at Berlin’s Humboldt University. He advocated greater cultural freedom in the GDR and was expelled from its writers’ association. In 1968 he moved to West Germany and became a German citizen in 1971. His best-known works include the novels *Der Mädchenkrieg* (1975) and *Der Kanal* (1978). Bieler died in Munich.
