Fana Asefaw

Fana Asefaw was born in Eritrea and came to Germany as a child with her family, who fled the Ethiopian regime in the early 1980s. She completed her secondary education there and studied medicine. At Berlin’s Charité university hospital, she wrote her dissertation on female genital mutilation. In 2008, she received the Dissertation Prize for Gynecology and Psychosomatics from the German Society for Psychosomatic Gynecology and Obstetrics. Asefaw worked as a senior physician in child and adolescent psychiatry and was involved in transcultural exchange.
