Born in 1971, Thomas Hanstein holds a doctorate in theology and a degree in theology and religious education. After completing technical studies, he worked for several years in industry and business. He subsequently worked as a teacher of religion, school chaplain and vocational-school teacher. In church service, he held positions including adviser to church leadership, an episcopal adviser and principal of a private school; he also served as a part-time Catholic deacon. Hanstein taught subjects including intercultural communication and creative direction at higher-education institutions and worked as a business and team coach. His professional interests included self-management, change management, onboarding and online teaching. His doctoral research focused on competency-based education in vocational training.
