Gerhard Feige

Gerhard Feige was born in 1951 in Halle (Saale), Germany. He studied philosophy and theology in Erfurt and was ordained a priest in Magdeburg in 1978. After earning his doctorate in 1988, he spent a year studying in Rome. From 1989 to 1999 he taught in Erfurt, becoming professor of Ancient Church History, Patristics and Eastern Churches studies in 1994. Ordained a bishop in 1999, he first served as auxiliary bishop of Magdeburg and became bishop of Magdeburg in 2005. Feige chaired the German Bishops’ Conference Commission for Ecumenism and served on the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity from 2014 to January 2023.
