Philippe Van Parijs, born in Brussels in 1951, is a Belgian philosopher and economist. He taught economics and social ethics at the Université catholique de Louvain and philosophy at Harvard University. A leading advocate of the idea of an unconditional basic income, he founded the Basic Income Earth Network (BIEN). In 2001, he received the Francqui Prize, Belgium’s highest academic distinction.
