Gregor Gysi

Gregor Gysi, born in 1948, is a German lawyer and politician. He first trained as a skilled worker in cattle breeding before studying law at Humboldt University in Berlin; he was admitted to the bar in 1971. In the GDR, he represented, among others, the dissidents Robert Havemann and Rudolf Bahro. Gysi chaired the Party of Democratic Socialism (PDS) from 1989 to 1993. He served several periods as a member of the German Bundestag and chaired the PDS and Left parliamentary groups from 1990 to 2002 and from 2005 to 2015. From 2016 to 2019, he was president of the Party of the European Left. His publications include the autobiography »Ein Leben ist zu wenig« and »Marx & wir«.
