Nikita Afanasjew was born in 1982 in Chelyabinsk, in what was then the Soviet Union, and moved to Germany in 1993. He worked as a journalist and wrote for publications including Die Zeit, GEO, Reportagen, taz, and Tagesspiegel. His journalistic travels took him through Eastern Europe and the post-Soviet region. In 2015, he received the German Reporter Award and was also nominated for the Henri Nannen and Axel Springer Prizes. To finance his schooling and university studies, he worked various odd jobs, including as a construction worker, scaffolder, and beer server. His debut novel, “Banküberfall, Berghütte oder ans Ende der Welt,” was published by Voland & Quist in 2017.
