Hannes Heer

Hannes Heer (born 1941) is a historian, film director and exhibition curator. After passing his state examinations in history and literature in 1968, he worked as a theatre dramaturge and film director following a professional ban. From 1993 to 2000, he was a research associate at the Hamburg Institute for Social Research and directed the exhibition project »Vernichtungskrieg. Verbrechen der Wehrmacht 1941 bis 1944« (War of Annihilation: Crimes of the Wehrmacht, 1941–1944). The touring exhibition documented war crimes committed by Germany’s regular armed forces during the Second World War and sparked widespread public debate. Heer received the Carl von Ossietzky Medal in 1997. His publications include »Tote Zonen. Die deutsche Wehrmacht an der Ostfront« (1999) and »Vom Verschwinden der Täter« (2004).
