George Eliot (real name Mary Ann Evans, 1819–1880) was an English novelist, translator, and journalist. Born in Nuneaton, Warwickshire, she published under a male pseudonym. After her father’s death in 1849, she moved to London and wrote for the liberal Westminster Review. Her first novel, Adam Bede, was published in 1858. Her best-known works include Middlemarch: A Study of Provincial Life, and she became a major representative of the psychological and social novel. She died in London.
