William Small (1843–1929) was born in Edinburgh and trained at the Royal Scottish Academy. He moved to London in 1865, where he established himself as a versatile painter and illustrator. His paintings focused mainly on rural and social themes, executed in a realistic style influenced by artists such as Herkomer and Bastien-Lepage.
