Frederick Dielman (1847–1935) was a German-American portrait and figure painter, illustrator, and draftsman. After graduating from Calvert College in New Windsor, Maryland, he studied under Wilhelm von Diez at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. Before pursuing his artistic career, he worked as a topographer and draftsman for the U.S. Army from 1866 to 1872. In New York, Dielman initially illustrated books and periodicals before becoming a noted painter of genre scenes. He was a founding member of the Society of American Artists, was named a National Academician in 1883, and served as president of the National Academy of Design from 1899. From 1903, he taught art at the College of the City of New York. He also contributed illustrations to deluxe editions of works by Longfellow, Hawthorne, George Eliot, and others.
