Georg Heym

Georg Heym (1887–1912) was a German poet and an early representative of Expressionism. From 1907, he studied history in Würzburg, Jena, and Berlin, and in 1910 joined the Neue Club, an association of young students and artists. His first and only poetry collection published during his lifetime appeared in 1911. Heym died in 1912 while skating on the Havel River, attempting to rescue his friend, the poet Ernst Balcke, from the ice. In addition to his poetry, he left behind novellas and fragments of dramas; his narrative prose was published posthumously.
