Ludwig Tieck (1773–1853) was a German writer, poet, translator, and editor, and one of the major figures of German Early Romanticism. His notable works include the epistolary novel “William Lovell,” the Künstlerroman “Franz Sternbald’s Wanderings,” and the tales “The Fair-Haired Eckbert” and “The Runenberg.” He was also known for his fairy-tale plays, including “Puss in Boots.” From 1825, Tieck worked as a dramaturge at the court theatre in Dresden and was active as a Shakespeare translator and editor. He was later appointed to a position in Berlin by King Frederick William IV, where he spent his final years. Tieck was born in Berlin on 31 May 1773 and died there on 28 April 1853.
