Frank Wedekind

Frank Wedekind (1864–1918) was a German writer, dramatist, and actor. After briefly studying law, he worked as a freelance writer and actor in cities including Berlin, Munich, and Paris. His best-known dramas include *Spring Awakening*, *Earth Spirit*, and *Lulu*. His socially critical works addressed the repression of human instincts, bourgeois double standards, and social hypocrisy. Wedekind co-founded and contributed to the satirical magazine *Simplicissimus* and served a six-month prison sentence for a satirical poem about Emperor Wilhelm II.
