Friedrich Schiller (1759–1805) was a German poet, dramatist, philosopher, historian, and physician. He first studied law and then medicine at the Karlsschule in Stuttgart, later working as a regimental physician. In 1789, he was appointed professor of history and philosophy in Jena. His best-known works include the plays *The Robbers*, *Intrigue and Love*, *Don Carlos*, and *William Tell*, as well as the ballad *The Pledge* and the poem “Ode to Joy.” After the performance of *The Robbers* despite a ban, Schiller was punished with arrest and a prohibition on writing and fled Württemberg. His friendship and collaboration with Goethe helped shape Weimar Classicism. Schiller died in Weimar.
