Detlev Claussen, born in Hamburg in 1948, studied philosophy, sociology, literature and politics in Frankfurt am Main, including under Theodor W. Adorno. He received his doctorate in 1975 and completed his habilitation in 1985. Claussen worked as a writer and served as a professor of social theory, cultural sociology and the sociology of science at the University of Hanover. His publications include “List der Gewalt. Soziale Revolutionen und ihre Theorien” (1982), “Grenzen der Aufklärung. Die gesellschaftliche Genese des modernen Antisemitismus” (1987), “Was heißt Rassismus?” (1994) and “Aspekte der Alltagsreligion” (2000). He also wrote biographies of Theodor W. Adorno (2003) and Béla Guttmann (2008).
