Christine Schirrmacher studied Islamic Studies, history, German literature and comparative religion in Giessen and Bonn. She received her doctorate in Islamic Studies from the University of Bonn in 1991 and completed her habilitation there with a study of influential Muslim theologians and their positions on religious freedom, human rights and apostasy from Islam. She was a professor of Islamic Studies at the University of Bonn and at the Protestant Faculty of Theology in Leuven, and also held guest professorships in Erfurt and Tübingen. Her research focused on Islamic fundamentalism, political systems and human rights in Islam. She published several books and numerous articles on Islam.
