Christa Schuenke, born in Weimar in 1948, studied English and French in Leipzig and philosophy in Berlin. From the 1970s onward, she worked as a literary translator from English, translating poetry, prose, plays and nonfiction into German. Her authors included William Shakespeare, John Donne, Herman Melville, John Keats, Edgar Allan Poe, Jonathan Swift and John Banville. Her work received, among others, the Christoph Martin Wieland Prize and the Straelen Translator’s Prize from the Kunststiftung NRW. In 2006, she was a DAAD Translator-in-Residence at Heriot-Watt University in Edinburgh.
