Steven Amsterdam was born in New York City in 1966. Before becoming a writer, he worked as a map editor, pastry chef and production assistant, among other occupations. His debut, Things We Didn’t See Coming, was named Book of the Year by the Australian newspaper The Age and nominated for the Guardian First Book Award. His second book, What the Family Needed, was nominated for the International IMPAC Prize and the Encore Award. Amsterdam also worked as a palliative care nurse.
