Peter Matthiessen (1927–2014) was an American writer and conservationist. After studying, he moved to Paris, where he founded the literary magazine The Paris Review. His best-known works include Wildlife in America (1959), At Play in the Fields of the Lord (1965), Blue Meridian: The Search for the Great White Shark (1971), and In the Spirit of Crazy Horse (1983). Matthiessen practiced Zen throughout his life. His work received several National Book Awards, including awards in 1979, 1980, and 2008.
