Seyla Benhabib, born in 1950 in Turkey, is a political scientist and philosopher. She studied philosophy and received her doctorate in 1977. At Yale University, she was Eugene Meyer Professor of Political Science and Philosophy. Her areas of research include European social and political philosophy, German political and legal thought, critical and feminist theory, Hannah Arendt, Jürgen Habermas, democratic theory, citizenship, and cosmopolitanism. Benhabib is a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her honors include the Ernst Bloch Prize (2009), the Dr. Leopold Lucas Prize (2012), and the Meister Eckhart Prize (2014).
