Peter F. Strawson

Peter Frederick Strawson (1919–2006) was a British philosopher. After studying philosophy, politics and economics at St John’s College, Oxford, he served in the armed forces for six years from 1940. He subsequently taught at University College in Wales and joined the University of Oxford in 1947. In 1968 he became Waynflete Professor of Metaphysical Philosophy there. Strawson was elected a Fellow of the British Academy in 1960 and was appointed a Knight Bachelor in 1977. He retired from his Oxford chair in 1987.
